Automatic for sure, that way you don't have to think about driving while you're driving.
I don't even think about it.
I always liked driving a standard. I thought it was fun...and I never had to think about it too hard either!
Well I do.
I never learned to drive a standard and sometimes that has been a problem, like the time my friend, Ann, was going into premature labor and I didn't know how to drive her van. We had a hard time finding someone to take her to the hospital and she finally had to call work. They sent the girl who was replacing her while she was on maternity leave to take her. We never even thought of calling an ambulance.
I like a standard...seems a bit more control and better on gas for the most part...however...I have to admit, I now have an automatic...its great and all..for sure...easier to drive..like having a butler...BUT...I get bored easy...and thats not a good thing...so..I guess for safety...standard...for ease...and easy...automatic...and ps...by the way...you are so far from that word I do not like (s t u p and so on) it is not funny...You are one rather incredible unique individual and I love you and so do many other folk...big hug yogramanita

It depends on what you want to do. As far as mileage, a standard is usually better because the engine has to turn less weight on the driveshaft. However, with a standard you may habitually shift at a higher rpm, which would give you worse mileage.
An automatic is less work, and leaves your hands free to do whatever. You never ever have to worry about stalling on a hill, or missing a shift, or over-revving your engine.
The ideal setup would be a manual with an automatic clutch, like Ferrari, BMW, and now Volkswagen have available, which effectively combines both systems. Mine is not a true manual, because it has no clutch.
Read Jim's 2nd paragraph, that's what I mean about "thinking about it".
I'll take an automatic because that will leave my hands free to brush my hair, eat my yogurt, or adjust my mascara. Can't drive a standard and doo all those things too.
Joe...that brother Jim of yours is something else...I am reading the comments here and come to his and start laughing my head off...I have a very very dear friend who he reminds me of...however...I wish I was making the money that she is making teaching at the art college...in the audio visual arts...so...who am I to laugh at someone who explains in detail how and why a car runs better or worse...actually if I was now to buy a car...I would feel better about a decision now that I know more about it...hugs once again and love to my fantastic family...yogramanita
